What is Breaking Precedent?
In Silicon Valley, we throw around cliches about breaking things a lot, so why does the industry still look and operate just like it did a decade ago, just with bigger capital calls?
Two decades in as a founder and a VC, and I believe two things: This industry doesn’t work for everyone and we need to break more than valuation records, we need to truly break the way we do things.
That’s set me on a path of taking a deeper look at the underpinnings of our industry, along with other industries like art, non-profits, sports, finance, law and, yes, space travel.
What are the precedents underpinning our lives that we have taken for granted? Which ones are the bedrocks we need. . . and which ones are holding us back.
I’m exploring with some of the smartest, most controversial, and interesting people I know in a new podcast called “Breaking Precedent.” It’s exactly the conversations we need to be having at a time when more of our fundamental societal bedrocks are in flux than ever before, whether that’s the nature of currencies, intelligence, democracy, life on this planet, the nature of equality and rights, and our very humanity.
